Dane and Paula welcome you to their restaurant and hope that you have a memorable experience
Dane comes to the Lugger with a life time of catering experience. The family owned and ran a highly successful Bakery business in the south of England. His father was a master baker and a lecturer in Bakery at the Southampton Bakery School and at Cornwall College. His mother is a qualified chef, though no longer practicing still has a passion for good food. Dane was trained in Southampton and has worked in a variety of catering establishments. He has worked in many aspects of the industry from bar to kitchen including head chef and waiting, finally as general manager, in a highly successful themed restaurant in the theatre district of Southampton.
Paula has worked in the customer service industry for many years. She has qualifications in Leisure and Tourism, and Accounting. She has also worked in food industry.
They have twin sons, John and Iain and a third son, Luka who are already developing a taste for Cornish fare, especially pasties!!
Dane and Paula took over The Lugger in December 2004, and after a winter of hard research and painting, opened the restaurant in March 2005. Since this time the restaurant dinning room has had a full refit, including a well stocked bar now sited in the dinning room, to give a much lighter environment in which to enjoy your dinning experience.
Dane and Paula are keen to given their diners a real taste of Cornwall, serving Cornish fare, locally sourced with exciting and interesting taste combinations.
The Lugger prepares and cooks all its dishes on the premises. In 2007 local award winning chef Martin Brightwell joined the team. Martin has created a new menu which pays respect to the local seasonal produce which is used.
The fish is supplied by a local fishmonger as well as from day boats from the harbour. The fish is locally caught where possible. From the sea to your plate, as fresh as can be.
The menu is constantly changing to accommodate the daily catches and seasonal variations. The fish dishes have been created drawing on Chef Martin Brightwell’s travels and dining experiences. They offer some unique and creative taste experiences.
All the vegetables are fresh, prepared and cooked to order. They are sourced locally and during the summer months are grown within Porthleven especially for The Lugger. The vegetables offered, will for these reasons vary from day to day or week to week.
All the meat is supplied by Steve at Cornwall Quality Meats, Penzance. He only supplies produce of Cornwall, and has won many national awards for his sausages. The Lugger is proud to serve his products on its menus
The Cornish flavour does not stop at the food menu, but carries on into the drinks as well. With wine from Bosue Valley Wines, St Ewe, Beer from Sharps at Rock, coffee from Miles tea and coffee (the only roasters and blenders of tea and coffee in the West Country), even the mineral water is from Cornwall.
